So to give you a head start, we’ve rounded up our top tips and skin routines to combat the low temperatures and beat the winter blues ready for the new summer ahead – remember those morning dues? Let get our skin feeling just that!

With weather predictions not looking positive over the next few months, with winter on the peak and wellies soon to return with cold crisp nights, chapped lips, noses and our hands frightfully cold lets keep them well nourished with some tender love and care!

And you ask? why is winter bad for your skin?

Well its simple yet devastating depending on what you do? Do you work outdoors? Are you stuck indoors? Have you got good ventilation? Is it warm? But then freezing when you step outside before you have had chance to cover up well, sometimes before the dash to the car to get home to your loved ones?

The cold temperatures and low humidity levels that winter brings make the air dry, which draws valuable moisture away from your skin. Harsh winds and dry indoor heat into the mix, and you have a whole host of potential skin problems, including eczema, psoriasis and dry, cracking skin… most of which can be avoided.

Moisturising is important at any time of year, but even more so in the winter, and I know some of us slap some on here and there for a quick fix, whilst we are rushing around but hey your skin deserves some love…. Investing in a decent moisturiser is one of the most important parts of your winter skincare regime, and for us FILLMED an OBAGI, both have the ability to replenish and hydrate dry skin, bringing you back alive.

Drink plenty of water

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again: drinking your recommended daily amount of water really can do wonders for your skin.

During winter low humidity robs your skin of its natural moisture.

We know that drinking water when its freezing hurts – hell sometimes you get brain freeze, feel free to swap it for fruity teas high in antioxidents or warm herbal teas like turmeric, ginger or lemon to keep you all warm inside.

We recommend 1.5 – 2 litres of water per days

Exfoliate regularly

Stick to short showers

If your anything like my other half… he spends a lifetime in the shower, but for winter I strongly advise not to.

Whilst it might be tempting to throw yourself into a long, hot and steamy shower after a long day at work, after battling the cold weather outside, its best to hold fire… my advice take short luke warm showers.

Hot steamy showers will only dehydrate you, steal your skins natural oils and make your skin more vulnerable to cracked skin, chapped lips and dry skin.

Instead, try to limit your showers to 10 minutes maximum and keep the temperature lukewarm.

Choose your skin products carefully

Winter is a good time to take a long, hard look at the skin products you’re using and ditch the ones that aren’t doing you – or your skin – any favours, you know the ones? The ones you’ve had for ages that might not even be in date, lets face it we all hold onto them.

Make sure you have a gentle cleanser – OBAGI have one and it smells incredible and its full of Vitamin C, hot your skin with a serum and lock it in with a deep moisturiser, this will keep your skin looking fresh, avoiding those products which contain alcohol.

Your lips will need some tender, loving care too; use a moisturising balm, such as petroleum jelly, to heal dry, cracked lips and prevent them from getting chapped.

Keep active

I’m a massive fan of eating health and keeping fit, but during the winter months we can become a little sluggish so, plan ahead and stay safe.

The weather is on the turn. Now that darkness draws in early and temperatures have dropped below what we Brits are generally willing to tolerate, it’s advisable to tweak our routines to continue reaping the benefits of our outdoor jaunts, whilst remaining safe and comfortable.

Things to consider when exercising outside

Safety comes first, so opt for well-lit, frequented streets if you’re on the move, and take precautions, such as scheduling workouts when others are likely to be around if you’re planning a HIIT blast in the park – particularly when it’s dark after all even a little bit of exercise can make a difference to your complexion.
