What is the lip flip? This is one question we are asked a lot. Put simply, the ‘lip flip’ is a procedure that uses Botox to make the lip appear fuller.

Whilst Botox is most known for its anti-aging benefits, it can also be used to correct your smile, by relaxing the muscles around your top lip which can make it appear fuller.

What is Botox?

Now, before we look at how the lip flip works, it helps to understand what Botox is and how it works within the body. Botox is a substance known as a neurotoxin, used to block chemical signals transmitted by the nerves. In turn, this relaxes muscles around the targeted area

Typically, Botox has been used to address signs of aging on the face around the forehead and eyes, but it can also be used to address several different concerns, both medically and aesthetically.

Medically, Botox injections can be used to address:

• Chronic migraines

• Excessive sweating

• Lazy eye/ squints

• Cervical dystonia

• Muscle contractures

Aesthetically, besides anti-aging, Botox is highly effective in correcting a gummy smile without adding volume to the lips using traditional dermal fillers.

What is the Lip Flip?

So, what is the lip flip, and what does it involve? Well, the lip flip uses Botox to make the lips appear fuller, without adding volume.

During the treatment, we will inject small amounts of Botox around your upper lip to relax the muscles. As a result, the top lip appears to “flip” outwards, making it appear fuller.

Now, it is important to understand that Botox is never used as a substitute for Hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. Botox cannot add volume to your lips, or enhance shape and symmetry, it is simply a temporary measure that can add a subtle, natural-looking “pout” to the lips.

Overall, the Botox lip flip treatment lasts around 6 months before it will begin to wear off. In comparison, lip fillers can last around 12 months, so if you are looking for a more permanent solution, you may want to consider lip fillers.

The lip flip can be considered if:

• You would like fuller-looking lips, without additional volume

• You feel you have a gummy smile

• Your upper lip appears thin when you smile

• You are looking for a more temporary solution

What to expect from Botox?

Before booking an appointment, we will invite you in for a consultation where we will discuss your concerns, examine your overall skin health, and recommend a suitable and effective treatment.

Botox is non-invasive and isn’t considered to be painful. However, you may experience some slight discomfort around the injection site, but we will numb the area using topical anaesthesia to alleviate any discomfort.

Remember, Botox is a medical procedure and should always be performed by a trained professional. Following treatment, you should be fine to resume your daily activities, but you are advised not to rub, or massage the area for at least 24 hours.
